da pinnacle: Experienced centre-back Pepe has left Besiktas after a mutual termination of his contract, meaning that he is set to become a free agent – with Spurs’ current options each being plagued with injuries, they should consider an approach for the Portuguese to offer some much needed cover.
What’s the word?
Well, a statement from Turkish giants Besiktas details that the 35-year-old is set to leave the club and “will be paid €100,700 until the date of termination”, meaning that he will most likely be a free agent come January – there will surely be a queue of suitors keen to acquire his services.
Spurs, meanwhile, have reported that Jan Vertonghen sustained a thigh injury against Barcelona in his side’s final Champions League group stage match and will therefore be sidelined until January. The timely returns of Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth will lessen the blow, however the fact is that all of the Lilywhites’ senior centre-backs have succumbed to injuries at some point this season.
Desperate times…
The 103-cap international formed a formidable partnership with Sergio Ramos in his Bernabeu days before completing a move to Besiktas in the summer of 2017 upon the expiry of his deal and, while he would be unlikely to be given game-time enough to replicate such a connection with either Vertonghen or Alderweireld, he would certainly be a useful figure to have in the dressing room as the club look to bring through the likes of Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth.
Signing Pepe would oppose Daniel Levy’s transfer policy but desperate times call for desperate measures and there are few risks attached to bringing in a player who has amassed over 500 club appearances in a career spanning 17 years, who can offer leadership and assurance at the back should Spurs’ injury woes continue.
The 6-foot-2 defender has shown this season in the Super Lig that he can still do the business at the back as he averages a match rating of 7.11 – he would surely be the shock signing of the window but perhaps the shrewdest one at that.
