Steven Davis says he could retire at Rangers.
The 34-year-old has joined the club on loan from Southampton, his second spell at Ibrox. And with his Saints’ contract set to expire in the summer, the midfielder says he may well end up remaining on a permanent basis.
What’s the word?
Davis has previously turned a loan move to Rangers into a permanent one, joining the club on a short-term deal from Fulham in 2008 and remaining until 2012, when he left to join Southampton.
His most recent return coincides with the signing of Jermain Defoe on a separate loan deal, a double deal that will surely boost the club’s hopes of wrestling the Scottish Premier League title away from Celtic.
And Davis says he is open to the prospect of seeing out his career at a club where he has won three SPL titles.
“Who knows? Football always throws up a few surprises,” he told Sky Sports News.
“But hopefully beyond the six months everything will go well and then we can look at things and make it a longer-term thing.”
And he also claims that manager Steven Gerrard did not have to do much to convince him to head north.
“Nobody had to sell the club to me. I know what the club is all about,” he added.
“Obviously the opportunity to work with the manager as well was a big draw, but it was an easy decision for me once I found out there was a bit of interest from the club.
“This is the move I wanted to happen and I just want get back to playing football and enjoying football.”
Experienced campaigner an offer Gerrard can’t refuse
Davis is perfect for Rangers, and Rangers are perfect for Davis.
The veteran midfielder has no need to prove his worth in the SPL, he can merely point to the winners’ medals that adorn his mantelpiece.

It is unlikely that Southampton would stand in his way were he to choose to run down his contract and sign for the club where he was previously a hero.
Ralph Hussenhuttl’s side have a young, mobile midfield, and Davis is unlikely to fit into that mould if he does return to St Mary’s.
Instead, Gerrard would do well to tie him down, and ensure he has no reason to leave Ibrox again.
