da betsul: Brendan Rodgers has paid tribute to Jonny Hayes for his display at Kilmarnock.
The 31-year-old impressed against St Johnstone last Sunday but sat out the Europa League tie with Valencia when Emilio Izaguirre was declared fit.
At Kilmarnock Hayes was restored to the side, starting just his fourth SPFL match of the season and playing a full part in Celtic’s dramatic victory.
With Kieran Tierney approaching full fitness the former Aberdeen man is likely to be back watching from the bench but his manager was full of praise for his display at Kilmarnock.
Speaking to Celtic TV Rodgers said: “Jonny is a great professional and a great team player. He is so important for the squad.
“He leads his life right and when he comes into the games he does very well. Yesterday (Sunday) was exceptional, both in attack and defence, he was superb.
“For the guys that aren’t playing so much it’s a great tribute to them in terms of ensuring that their focus is right. That’s never easy when you want to be playing games.”
Hayes was signed as a winger in the summer of 2017 to provide competition for Scott Sinclair and James Forrest but found his chances limited when Patrick Roberts returned for an extra season on loan.
A broken leg in December brought his first season to a halt with Lewis Morgan and Mikey Johnston joining the competition for places in the side.
Celtic’s early season defeats at Hearts, Kilmarnock and Hibs were partly caused by the introduction of fringe players that looked short on sharpness but as Hayes has shown in his last couple of appearances he is capable of coming into the team when required.
